Tips on how to write a Mother's Day letter to your mom to go with your Mother's Day Flower Delivery:

For Men or Boys

From A Gentleman's perspective

The Salutation:

Try to begin your letter with a sentimental introduction.  For instance, instead of starting out by saying, "Dear Mom . . .," Describe a feeling instead, for instance "To the woman who shaped my life . . . ,"

The Introduction:

If you have always had a good relationship with your mom then begin your letter with a favorite quote or poem to help break the ice.

On the other hand, if your relationship is strained, but you want to make amends, or begin fresh, then I suggest that you begin your letter with a favorite quote or poem also.

Sentimentality is always a great ice breaker, because it speaks more genuinely and from the heart.  Try to avoid starting with an apology, because it takes away from your meaning, and has a tendency to make people feel uncomfortable.  Besides that, unless it makes her laugh or smile then it is simply not necessary.

Poem Examples:

The Beauty Of Men

It is not violence but muscle-the force to do-

curled and bent and burning

inside.

They deny it. Hide it. Rip it out

with hammers and knives and guns, even crosses

if they have to.

These are the signs of the beauty of men:

set, the shimmer of muscle

eager to lift beyond any limit, lost

In the wild pleasure of motion. They will move the world

with their own two hands, force it if they have to, doing

what mere thoughts didn't know had to be done.

Another Man's Wife

The happiest days of my life
Were spent in the arms of another man's wife
Thanks, Mum, for everything

Super Mom

Mom, you're a wonderful mother,
So gentle, yet so strong.
The many ways you show you care
Always make me feel I belong.

You're patient when I'm foolish;
You give guidance when I ask;
It seems you can do most anything;
You're the master of every task.

You're a dependable source of comfort;
You're my cushion when I fall.
You help in times of trouble;
You support me whenever I call.

I love you more than you know;
You have my total respect.
If I had my choice of mothers,
You'd be the one I'd select!

–  Joanna Fuchs

Quote Examples:

"My friend Myron tells me, last year on Mother's Day the whole family got together for a big dinner and afterward, when Mom started to clean up, I said to her," don't bother with those dishes, Mom. Today is Mother's Day, you can always do them tomorrow.' "  – Joey Adams

Behind every successful man stands a proud wife and a surprised mother-in-law. – Brooks Hays

A mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie.  ~Tenneva  Jordan

All women become like their mothers.  That is their tragedy.  No man does.  That's his.  ~Oscar Wilde, The Importance of Being Earnest, 1895

If you have a mom, there is nowhere you are likely to go where a prayer has not already been.  ~Robert Brault

The Body:

In the body of your letter describe why your mom is special, dear, unique, outstanding-or all of those things.  Tell her what her influence has done for you in your lifetime.  Use caution here, you only need a paragraph or two, and if your mom did something that really upset you 15 years ago, then it's time to let it that go.  This is not the time, or the place, to express negative feelings, or re-hash old wounds.

Example:

"Thank you mom, for holding my heart close to you, while you let go of my hand.  Thank you also, for not giving me the answer every time I asked a question, but instead for letting me figure things out on my own. Learning these simple truths about you has taken me years to understand and I wanted to tell you that it will take me a lifetime to show my appreciation."

Letter Writing Tips:

  • Set aside some time to write this letter so that you are not distracted. This will give you the chance to focus only on writing. There is a chance that distractions can interfere with your thought process and you may not be able to concentrate on what you meant to say.  So spend some time in solitude, thinking about what you want to say, before you put pen to paper.  Sometimes it helps to go through a scrapbook or an old photo album. You should find a lot of good ideas from that.
  • Remember a good time, or good times, or special times, and write about those.
  • Go ahead and be sentimental. Let your guard down. Your mom will understand and appreciate your effort and your energy.
  • Be sure to put a date on your letter-It is one of the few letters that will be saved for years to come.
  • Go ahead and splurge on some special stationery, and stamps. If this is a letter you are sending in the mail, make sure it is appropriate to receive your letter at the destination you are sending it to. For example, if you are sending this to your mom so she gets it at work instead of at home, make sure it won't compromise her position at work or embarrass her in front of the boss or her co-workers.
  • Always write a first draft first. Don't send that one.  Rewrite it instead.
  • If you have handwriting that's difficult to read then you might consider using a computer with a nice font that is tidy and readable. Use clean stationery.

The Signature:

Use the signature that expresses love. Don't just sign your name, because it seems a little cold after writing a letter like this one.

Example:

"I am, now and forever… Your loving son,"

What you must include with this letter:  A box of tissue, because there will be tears – The Good Kind!
