National Grandparents Day Purpose:

Mark your calendar for Sunday, September 11, 2011!

The purpose of the national observance is simply designed. It's meaning is established to recognize and honor all grandparents and to give grandparents a day of their own to show their love for their children and for their children's children.

It is also meant to honor the distinguished and special significance, history, and importance of grandparents within our society and the positive and strong influence they have on all ages, but especially on the young.

The holiday even has its own song,  "A Song For Grandma And Grandpa," by Singer/Songwriter Johnny Prill.

And the official Grandparents Day flower – The forget-me-not flower, chosen by the National Grandparents Day Council on April 20, 1999.

Mrs. McQuade's original purpose was that Grandparents Day focus on family.  Consider adopting an elderly friend for the day, someone who is not only your immediate family, but those people who have lost their families or who are living alone, or living in nursing homes and cannot get out on their own.

Mrs. Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade, from West Virginia, who lived to be 91-years-old (1917-2008), and was a mother of 15 children.  Mrs. McQuade was the original person who thought up Grandparents Day.

Today, any parent or child of a Grandparent, or even a grandparent themselves can make Grandparents Day the perfect opportunity for their families to start the kinds of traditions that revolve around memories made of fun and created newly each year.  A great place to begin your grandparents day is with Breakfast.

Throughout history, our families were guided and given strength by the support of those devoted Grandparents and elderly mentors who took part in their families lives.

Grandparents and older mentors have a special place in our family, home and community.   Grandparents see to it that the stories and traditions of our culture and heritage are passed down through each generation.

Spend your Grandparents Day on Sunday helping Grandparents and grandchildren reminisce about days past with their grandkids.

Try to remember that not everyone in a nursing home is elderly and never assume that those people who are in a nursing home have family members who visit them.

Use this day, Grandparents Day, to create a loving family tradition in your own home and share it with your neighbors and community for those who cannot get out or who have no visitors.  Share that spirit with your children.  From your graciousness and kindness they will learn character.  Use your imagination to create an inexpensive and affordable gift basket for your grandparent

Have children pick a beautiful wild bunch of flowers for a special gift basket idea to take with you and share.

"Grandparents are there to help the child get into mischief they haven't thought of yet."  ~Gene Perret
